The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
