Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
